Tigerbelles open outdoor season at Morehouse Relays

Nashville, Tenn. - The Tennessee State University Tigerbelles will open their 2010 outdoor season when they head to Atlanta, Ga. to compete in the 39th Annual Morehouse Relays.

The three-day competition will take place on the campus of Morehouse College from Thursday, March 18, to Saturday, March 20, on the Edwin Moses Track inside B.T. Harvey Stadium.

The meet will host track and field teams from the Atlanta metro area high school ranks and the following collegiate teams: Alabama A&M (M&W), Albany State (M&W), Central State (M&W), Clark Atlanta (M&W) Florida A&M (M&W), Fort Valley State (M&W), Georgia State (M&W), Kentucky State (M&W), Lane (M&W), Miles (M&W), Paine (M&W), Rust (M&W), Stillman (M&W), Troy (M&W) and Tuskegee (M&W).

The meet will begin with the college decathlon and heptathlon at 10 a.m. on day one and day two. On the final day (3/20), the meet begins at 9:00 a.m. with the combined men and women's 10, 000-meter run, men's javelin and women's hammer.  

Last year at the Morehouse Relays, the Tigerbelles started the outdoor season capturing three first place finishes including two in relay competition.

Martinique Guice led the individual performances winning the long jump with a leap of 18'06.50". She then followed placing third in the triple jump with a mark of 35'09.25". Last year, Guice finished the regular outdoor season undefeated in the long jump winning the conference outdoor title in the event before placing 21st at the 2009 Mideast Regional Championship.

The Tigerbelles also took first in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:43.13 and the 4x800-meter relay, capturing first place by 47 seconds with a 10:01.00 clocking.

Also in the field events, Ebonie Jackson garnered a second-place finish tossing a 126'09" in the discus event. The Tigerbelles also turned in third place performances in the 4x100-meter relay (49.34 sec.) and 4x400-meter relay (4:02.23).

The team is coming off a week absence from competition after placing seventh in the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship (2/27).

Guice highlighted the team effort retaining her individual championship title in the long jump with her best mark of the season, 19" 03.25 (5.87m).

Gabrielle Todd managed a season best in the 400-meter dash and high jump events. She took third in the high jump with a vault of 5" 04.25 (1.63m) and finished fifth in the 400m with a clocking of 57.36 seconds.

Next week, the Tigerbelles will compete in the Weems Baskin Relays hosted by the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. on March 27th.
