Nashville, Tenn. - The men's and women's track and field teams will cap the indoor season when Tennessee State University hosts the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
This will be the third time TSU has hosted the contest. The meet is scheduled for February 26-27 at the Wilma Rudolph Indoor Track inside the Gentry Center. Admission is $5.00 for two-day passes and $3.00 for day passes.
The contest will begin on Friday (2/26) with the women's long jump at 2 p.m. Day one will conclude with the distance medley relay and 5, 000-meter run at 6:30 p.m. The first day will also consist of prelims for the 55m, 800m, 400m, 55m hurdles and 200m dashes.
The finals in all events will take place on Saturday (2/27) and will begin at 10 a.m. with the women's weight throw. The championship will conclude the championship with the 4x400-meter relay at 3:15 p.m.
Twelve men and women teams make up the participating members in the OVC Indoor Championship. The pool of teams include: Austin Peay State (W), Tennessee Tech (W), Jacksonville State (W), Eastern Illinois (M&W), Eastern Kentucky (M&W), Murray State (W), Southeast Missouri State (M&W) and Tennessee State (M&W).
Eastern Illinois is the returning champion for both men and women's team titles.
TSU men and women teams enter having finished fourth last season after the Tigerbelles captured the team title in 2008. Five Tigerbelles are ranked in the top ten on the OVC Indoor Performance List.
Martinique Guice, last year's indoor champion in the long jump, is listed among the league's best in several events including the 55-meter dash, long jump, and triple jump. Guice ranks sixth in the long jump (18' 1.5", 5.52m) and triple jump (36' 7", 11.15m) while posting the eighth fastest time in the 55-meter dash at 7.25 seconds.
In the 400m, Jacarra Dennis and Gabrielle Todd are both listed at eighth with an identical season mark of 58.50 seconds in the event. Dennis is also ranked ninth in the triple jump (35'10.5") with newcomer Daniecce Ward managing an eighth seed with her best jump of 36' 2". In other field events, Ebonie Jackson recorded her best mark in the throwing events with a mark of 51'11" in the weight throw and ranks seventh in the event.
For the relays, the T-belles held the second fastest time in the 4x400-meter relay in conference since the start of the season until last weekend. The team moved to third with their best time of 3:56.61. In the distance medley relay, the T-belles have only entered one competition this season and hold the fourth fastest time at 11:13.54.
For the Flying Tigers, Dwayne Johnson, Nathaniel Moore, Julian Mallory, Michael Rideout, Rodney Darden, Phillip Myton, Jamal Henderson, Marquis Hunter, Xavier Walton, Adrien Hill, Avian Hughes, Johnnie Poole, and Arthur Combest have fielded the top ten performances in the OVC in several events.
In the 55-meter dash, Johnson holds the fastest time at 6.44 seconds followed by Moore at 6.47 seconds. Mallory sits tied for eighth with a time of 6.59 seconds. Moore also holds the third fastest time in the 200m (22.04 secs.) and is sixth in the 400m (49.17 secs.)
Mallory, Darden and Rideout join Moore in the top ten in the 200-meter dash. Mallory ranks sixth (22.30 secs.), Darden, seventh (22.47 secs.) and Rideout, tenth (22.64 secs.). In the 400m, Rideout also holds the fifth seed with a time of 49.11 seconds with Myton holding the ten-spot at 49.97 seconds.
Combest has registered top marks in the 55m hurdles (7.60 secs.) and the high jump (6' 8.25"). He holds the second best mark in the OVC in both events. Henderson follows in third in the high jump with a vault of 6' 02.25".
The long jump is the Flying Tigers' strength with four athletes in the top ten on the performance list. Walton leads the way at third (23' 3.5") with Hill (22 '4.5"), Hughes (22' 3") and Poole (22' 1.5") filling out the fifth, sixth, and seventh seed.
The 4x400-meter relay team has highlighted the indoor season maintaining the second fastest time in the OVC at 3:16.12. The team has not competed in the distance medley relay and will make their debut in the event this season on Friday (2/26).
Three members of the team ranked in the top-ten will not compete. Tyson Kemp, Trenton Britt, Lequinn Davis will not compete. Kemp is listed with the fourth best throw in the shot put (52' 2.75"). Britt is eight in the triple jump (45' 1.75) and Davis is also ranked eighth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.59 seconds.
Both the Flying Tigers and Tigerbelles will begin the outdoor season at the Morehouse Relays in Atlanta, Ga. The meet is scheduled for March 19-20.
