Several Tigerbelles Steadily Improving, Ranked Among OVC Best
Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee State University Tigerbelles will conclude the regular outdoor season when they head to Richmond, Ky. to participate in the Eastern Kentucky Open on Friday, April 17th. The meet is hosted by Ohio Valley Conference opponent Eastern Kentucky University and will be held at the Tom Samuels Track.
Events are scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. with a rolling schedule and will last almost until 10:00 p.m. More than 15 schools are expected to compete including: Kentucky, Tennessee, Marshall, Morehead, Lindsey Wilson, Campbellsville, and Centre, among other schools entered.
Spotlighting the Tigerbelles' performances, among others, is sophomore Martinique Guice. Guice claims the top spot in the long jump on the OVC Best List with a mark of 19'04.00". She also ranks second in the triple jump (37'08.00) and has posted 12.26 seconds in the 100-meter dash. Earlier this week, she garnered her second OVC Athlete of the Week honor of the outdoor season and is undefeated in the long jump.
Seniors Lanika Horn and Rahab Kagaruki have improved their times in their events every week. Horn has dropped her 100-meter hurdles time, listing in the OVC top ten, with a 15.01 clocking. Horn is also ranked third in the triple jump at 37'03.50". Kagaruki sits fourth among OVC competitors in the 800-meter dash, less than one second shy of the fastest time.
The EKU Open will end the regular season for the T'- belles before heading back to Richmond, Ky. to challenge for the 2009 OVC Outdoor Track and Field Championship. The two-day championship meet is scheduled to be held May 1-2.
