Austin Peay Invitational Leads to Five First Place Finishes for Tigerbelles

Guice and Onwu Help Power Tigerbelles 

to Strong Performance

Clarksville, Tenn. – The Tennessee State University Tigerbelles displayed their strongest team performance on the season carrying home five first-place awards, including 11 top-three finishes, in the Austin Peay Invitational Saturday afternoon. The meet featured more than 10 schools and was hosted by Ohio Valley Conference opponent Austin Peay at Governor's Statium.

Martinique Guice dished out a stellar peformance winning the long jump (18' 00.50") and 100-meter dash (12.40) while placing in the top-three in two other events. Guice placed second in her first appearance of the season in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.73 seconds. She then captured second in the triple jump with a mark 35' 08.50".

The Tigerbelles put a strong hold on several events on the day finishing first and second in the long jump, triple jump and discus throw. 

Ashli Beverly jumped 17' 08.75" for second place in the long jump behind Guice while Lanika Horn won the triple jump with a leap of 36' 01.25". Horn also placed third in the high jump clearing 5' 02.25" and grabbed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with her fastest time on the season, 15.05 seconds.

In the discus throw, Kathy Onwu and Tanesha Campbell finished first and second with their best throws of the season. Onwu took the win with a career toss of 139' 04.50" and Campbell followed with a personal best, 139' 01.00" mark, for runner-up. Campbell also won the shot put with a season high mark of 44'00.50".

Onwu continued a strong outing in the field events with her best marks on the year in the javelin and shot put. She finished second in the javelin with a career best throw (100'11.50) and fourth in the shot put (40'09.5).

Other Tigerbelles displayed steady performances running their fastest times on the year. In the 800-meter dash, Rahab Kagaruki ran her career best at 2:17.67 placing third overall. Camille Zaidieh knocked off four seconds in the 400-meter hurdles moving to 1:10.09 for a second place finish.

Pia Perez tallied her fastest time this year in the 200-meter (26.05) and 400-meter (59.82) dash, placing fourth in both events. Ashley Anderson took fourth in both the triple and long jump. Anderson jumped a season best with a vault of 34'05.00" in the triple and followed with a 16' 04.25" performance in the long jump.

In the relays, both the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams finished third overall.

The Tigerbelles will jump back into action at home in the Boston Moon Classic at the Ed Temple Track on Saturday, April 11th. The high school heats are set to begin on Friday (4/10).
