Tigerbelles Cap Track and Field Season at OVC Championship

Richmond, Ky. - The Tennessee State University women's track and field team finished seventh overall with 52 points at the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship this past weekend at the Tom Samuels Track on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University.

Eastern Illinois captured the team title with 188 points followed by Southeast Missouri State (155), Murray State (91.5), Jacksonville State (78.5), Austin Peay (76.5) and Eastern Kentucky (72). Tennesse Tech completed the team results scoring 25 points.

Sophomore Martinique Guice won the OVC title in the long jump with a personal best, 20'07.75" (3.4 wind). Her mark qualifies for next week's Regional Championship hosted by the University of Louisville. Guice also finished fifth in 100-meter dash (12.17) and placed sixth in the triple jump (36'04.75).

Seniors Lanika Horn and Rahab Kagaruki also scored in their individual events. Horn finished second in the triple jump  (37'05.25) and sixth in the high jump (5'02.25). Kagaruki placed fifth in the 800-meter (2:18.07) and seventh in the 1500-meter run (4:49.10). 

In the throwing events, sophomore Tanesha Campbell finished fifth and senior Kathy Onwu placed eigth. Campbell threw a season best, 45'10.50", and Onwu posted a 40'05.50" toss.
 
Freshmen Teannah Holland and Ashli Beverly showed promise scoring in their open events. Holland placed sixth in the discus with a career throw 121'08.00 and Beverly leaped a season best, 18'03.75", for a fifth place finish in the long jump.
 
In the relays, the 4x100-meter team picked up seventh place (48.61) and the 4x400-meter relay team's three year streak was snap finishing fifth overall (3:59.47).
