Tennessee State to Host OVC Indoor Track & Field Championship



Tennessee State University Tigerbelle, Dominique Ward-Holmes, has been named been named the Ohio Valley Conference Female Track Athlete of the Year.

The post season honors were announced Thursday (2/28) in advance of the 2008 OVC Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Tennessee State.

Tennessee State University will be the center of the OVC Indoor Track world Friday (2/29) and Saturday (3/01) when TSU hosts the 2008 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship. The Two-day event will be conducted at the Gentry Center complex on the Wilma Rudolph Indoor Track. Events begin at 2:00p on Friday and 10a on Saturday. Click here for the full schedule of events.

Fifteen Men and Women’s teams from ten OVC schools will compete for the 2008 championship. Last year, Eastern Illinois captured both Men’s and Women’s titles, and Tennessee State University had the two top individual winners in Dominique Ward and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie capturing the top Female and Male Athlete of the Championship, respectfully. In 2007, the TSU Tigerbelles finished in second place in the women’s title race and the Flying Tigers finished third in the men’s competition.

TSU Tigerbelle, Dominique Ward-Holmes, has been named OVC Female Athlete of the Week four (of eight) weeks. Ward-Holmes has recorded OVC Indoor bests in four events, 55m (7.05), 60m (7.66), 200m (24.05) and the 400m (54.13). She has provisionally qualified for the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 200m and 400m events with personal bests.

Dominique Ward-Holmes is a two-time OVC champion in the 400-meter and will also look to defend her 2007 200-meter title at this year's OVC Championships. If Ward-Holmes were to win the 400-meter this season she would join Eastern Kentucky's Charmine Byer (1985-88) and Southeast Missouri's Heather Keltner (1998-2000) as the only three-time champions in the event.
