The Tennessee State women’s basketball team returns to action Saturday, Jan. 18 at home against Eastern Kentucky. Game time for the early afternoon match-up is set for 2 p.m. in Gentry Center.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Tennessee State (2-13, 0-5 OVC) is looking for its first conference win of the season. TSU is coming off a disappointing, 84-47, home loss to Morehead State on Thursday. The Lady Tigers have dropped six consecutive games.
Tennessee State is averaging 59.9 points per game while shooting 34.3 percent from the field and 26.6 percent from long range. TSU is shooting an OVC best 72.8 percent from the free-throw line.
Taylor Roberts leads the team in scoring with 14.5 ppg to go with 4.2 rpg. Jazmine Young is the second leading scorer with 10.9 ppg while. Jaden Wrightsell is pulling down a team-best 5.6 rebounds per outing.
LAST TIME OUT
TSU suffered an, 84-47, loss to Morehead State Thursday night in the Gentry Center. TSU got off to a slow start but battled back to within six early in the second quarter. The Lady Tigers, however, went cold and got outscored, 20-3, in the rest of the period. After trailing 45-23 at halftime, TSU continued to play from behind and never managed to get back into the game.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Eastern Kentucky (7-9, 1-4 OVC) is coming off a 48-68 loss at Belmont on Thursday. The Colonels lone OVC win is against SIUE. EKU is led in scoring by Bria Bass (8.7 ppg) Samari Mowbray (8.0 ppg) and De’ayra Davis (7.9 ppg). The Colonels average 58.1 ppg while shooting 35.1 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from three-point range.
LAST TIME THEY MET
TSU captured a, 57-31, win at Eastern Kentucky Saturday night in McBrayer Arena. The contest was tied, 21-21, midway through the second quarter when the Lady Tigers turned up their defensive pressure and outscored the Colonels 36-10 the rest of the way. Tia Wooten led TSU with 15 points while Jaden Wrightsell added 11. Andreana Wrister pulled down a game-high eight rebounds to go with five steals.
TSU will match-up with Eastern Kentucky for the 66th time in the series history with the Colonels leading 40-25. The Lady Tigers claimed both of last year’s meetings and have won five straight over the Colonels. EKU’s last win was a 66-62 victory on Jan. 14, 2017.
