The Tennessee State University women’s basketball will open up Ohio Valley Conference play on Thursday, Jan. 2 against Eastern Illinois. Game time for the league kick-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Tennessee State (2-8) will look to get back on track after a tough non-conference slate. The Lady Tigers are most recently coming off a, 75-65, loss to Ivy League opponent Columbia on Monday.
Tennessee State is averaging 61.1 points per game while shooting 33.9 percent from the field and 26.6 percent from long range. TSU is shooting 70.7 percent from the free-throw line.
Taylor Roberts leads the team in scoring with 13.9 ppg to go with 4.6 rpg. Jazmine Young is the second leading scorer with 11.5 ppg while. Jaden Wrightsell is pulling down a team-best 6.3 rebounds per outing.
LAST TIME OUT
TSU fought back from an 18-point deficit to make it a game down the stretch but ultimately fell to Columbia, 75-65, at home. After falling behind by 18-points in the second period, TSU turned up its energy and outscored Columbia 37-31 in the last two quarters. TSU closed the gap to four points several times but that would be as close as the Lady Tigers could get. Taylor Roberts led TSU with 22 points while Jazmine Young scored a career-high 21 points to go with eight rebounds. Jaden Wrightsell finished the game with 12 points and six boards.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Eastern Illinois is coming off a 78-66 loss to Valparaiso on Monday. The Panthers are 6-5 on the season and are led in scoring by Abby Wahl (13.9 ppg), Karle Pace (12.3 ppg) and Taylor Steele (11.5 ppg).EIU averages 66.0 points per game while shooting 40.5 percent from the field. EIU was predicted to finish 10th in the OVC race.
LAST TIME THEY MET
In a game that went down to the wire, TSU gutted out a, 70-66, win over Eastern Illinois on Senior Night. TSU trailed by four points early in the fourth quarter but battled back to tie the game. TSU used a run to capture a seven-point lead with just under two minutes remaining, but in dramatic fashion, had to fight off EIU down the stretch. The Lady Tigers were up 68-66 when Tia Wooten hit two clutch free-throws with 8.8 seconds remaining to give TSU a 70-66 lead. EIU’s final shot attempt was off the mark.
Tennessee State will match up with Eastern Illinois for the 44th time in the series history with EIU holding a 28-15 advantage. TSU claimed last year’s meeting and has won four out of the last five contests. Before this latest streak, TSU dropped 15 straight to EIU from 2007-2015.
