GAMEDAY: The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team will close out the regular season with a match-up against crosstown opponent Belmont University on Saturday. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. in the Curb Event Center.

THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE: Tennessee State (6-20, 4-13 OVC) is coming off a disappointing, 68-65, loss to Tennessee Tech on the road Thursday night. Each of TSU’s last three losses have been by three points or less. The Lady Tigers will look to close out the regular season with a win.

Redshirt junior Tia Wooten is leading the team with an OVC best 21.5 points per game while freshman Taylor Roberts averages 15.0 points per outing. Kaliya Griffin (8.4 ppg) is the third leading scorer for the Lady Tigers. Wooten and Roberts also lead the team in rebounding.

As a team, TSU is averaging 68.6 points per game while shooting 37.9 from the field and 31.0 percent from three-point range. The Lady Tigers are shooting 75.6 from the free-throw line.

In the OVC rankings, TSU is second in free-throw percentage, third in offensive rebounding and fourth in steals.

LAST TIME OUT: TSU battled the entire night and the decision went down to the final moments but TSU did not make enough plays to come away with the win in a, 68-65, loss to Tennessee Tech on the road. After using a 10-0 run to create some distance in the third quarter, TSU got outscored 24-14 in the final period. TSU trailed by three with 24 seconds remaining but could not connect on its shot attempts to force overtime. Tia Wooten registered her 11th double-double of the season with 24 points and 15 rebounds while Taylor Roberts (14) and Maxine Beard (10) also reached double-figures. Beard dished out seven assists.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT: Belmont (27-3, 17-0) clinched the OVC Regular Season Championship and reached 27 wins for the first time in the Bruins Division I era. BU is also ranked in the Top 25. Kylee Smith leads the team with 18.2 ppg, while Darby Maggard (16.7 ppg) and Sally McCabe (14.6 ppg) also average double-digits. As a team, the Bruins average 78.7 points per game while shooting 46.9 percent from the field and 36.9 percent from three-point range.

SERIES INFORMATION: Tennessee State will face Belmont for the 42nd time in the series history with the Bruins holding a 30-11 lead. BU claimed the first meeting of the season and has won six straight over TSU. The last time the Lady Tigers beat the Bruins was in 2015, the year TSU won the OVC Tournament Championship.

LAST TIME THEY MET: TSU dropped an, 87-70, decision to Belmont the first time they met in the Gentry Center. The Lady Tiger offense went cold in the second quarter as the Bruins used a 24-2 run to open up the lead. TSU competed in the final two quarters, outscoring the Bruins 22-16 in the final frame but the deficit proved too much to overcome. TSU was led in scoring by Tia Wooten’s 31 points while Kaliya Griffin added 14 and Taylor Roberts finished with 12.
