GAMEDAY: The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team will return to its home court on Thursday to host Morehead State in OVC action. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. in Gentry Center. The team will wear pink jerseys for the Play4Kay game.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE: Tennessee State (5-18, 3-11 OVC) is looking to make a run down the stretch to keep OVC Tournament hopes alive. TSU fell to league leader Belmont, 87-70, Thursday night in the Gentry Center despite shooting a season-high 92.9 percent from the free-throw line.
Redshirt junior Tia Wooten is leading the team with an OVC best 21.6 points per game while freshman Taylor Roberts averages 14.8 points per outing. Kaliya Griffin (8.6 ppg) is the third leading scorer for the Lady Tigers. Wooten and Roberts also lead the team in rebounding.
As a team, TSU is averaging 68.7 points per game while shooting 37.6 from the field and 31.0 percent from three-point range. The Lady Tigers are shooting 75.0 from the free-throw line.
In the OVC rankings, TSU is second in free-throw percentage, third in offensive rebounding and fourth in steals.
LAST TIME OUT: The Lady Tigers suffered a heartbreaking loss to Jacksonville State, 62-61, on Thursday. TSU led by as many as 13 points but saw the game slip away in the final 26 seconds. TSU had a four point lead by four with 26 seconds remaining but a missed free-throw, defensive lapses and a crucial turnover led to TSU getting outscored 6-1 in the final 26 seconds. Tia Wooten had 19 points while Taylor Roberts added 15.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT: Morehead State (18-9, 9-5 OVC) is coming off a close, 59-56, loss to Eastern Kentucky. The Eagles are in fourth place in the league standings. MSU averages 72.7 points per game while five players score in double-digits each game. Miranda Crockett leads the team with 14.9 ppg while Eriel McKee (13.1 ppg), Darianne Seward (12.8 ppg), Tierra McGowan (12.7 ppg) and Erin Blaine (10.4 ppg) also average double-digits.
SERIES INFORMATION: Tennessee State and Morehead State will meet for the 60th time in the series history with the Eagles holding a 32-27 series lead. The Eagles claimed the first meeting of the season 97-81 in Morehead, Ky. on Feb. 1.
LAST TIME THEY MET: TSU posted its third-highest point total of the season but it was not enough as the Lady Tigers fell to Morehead State, 97-81. Tia Wooten led TSU with 27 points and 10 rebounds for her 8th double-double of the season. Kaliya Griffin finished with 13 points while Taylor Roberts (12) and Maxine Beard (11) also reached double-digits. TSU battled in the first half but saw the opponent’s lead grow to 19 in the third period after getting outscored, 32-21, in the frame. The deficit proved too much to overcome.
