GAMEDAY: The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team returns to action on Saturday at Jacksonville State. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. in Pete Mathews Coliseum. The Lady Tigers will play their second game in three days.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE: Tennessee State (5-17, 3-10 OVC) is looking to make a run down the stretch to keep OVC Tournament hopes alive. TSU fell to league leader Belmont, 87-70, Thursday night in the Gentry Center despite shooting a season-high 92.9 percent from the free-throw line.
Redshirt junior Tia Wooten is leading the team with an OVC best 21.7 points per game while freshman Taylor Roberts averages 14.8 points per outing. Kaliya Griffin (8.9 ppg) is the third leading scorer for the Lady Tigers. Wooten and Roberts also lead the team in rebounding.
As a team, TSU is averaging 69.1 points per game while shooting 37.5 from the field and 30.9 percent from three-point range. The Lady Tigers are shooting 75.0 from the free-throw line.
In the OVC rankings, TSU is second in free-throw percentage, third in offensive rebounding and fourth in steals.
LAST TIME OUT: TSU was down by three points when Belmont used a 24-2 run to open up the lead. The Lady Tigers were never able to close the gap. Tia Wooten finished with a game-high 31 points while Kaliya Griffin scored 14. Taylor Roberts had 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT: Jacksonville State (14-10, 8-5 OVC) has lost two straight, most recently dropping a close, 60-58, decision to Tennessee Tech Thursday night at home. The Gamecocks are currently in fifth place in the OVC standings. JSU averages 62.6 points per game behind a .377 field goal percentage. Rayven Pearson (8.7 ppg), Taylor Hawks (8.3 ppg) and Tyler Phelion (7.9 ppg) lead the team in scoring.
SERIES INFORMATION: Tennessee State will match up with Jacksonville State for the 34th time in the series history and the second time this season. JSU claimed the first meeting, 75-56, in the Gentry Center on Jan. 4. The Gamecocks have won two straight over the Lady Tigers.
LAST TIME THEY MET: TSU cut a 20-point deficit down to just seven points but Jacksonville State closed the game with a, 13-1, run to pull away down the stretch. JSU won 75-56. Tia Wooten poured in 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double but she was the only Lady Tiger to reach double-figures. Jacksonville State had four players score in double-digits led by Gretchen Morrison’s 17 points. Taylor Roberts did not play in the game.
