GAMEDAY: The Tennessee State women’s basketball team will return to Nashville to host league leader Belmont on Thursday, Feb. 8. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. in Gentry Center on Greek Night.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE: Tennessee State (5-16, 3-9 OVC) returns home after picking up its first road win of the season at Eastern Kentucky last week. The Lady Tigers went down to the wire in a thrilling, 59-58, win over Eastern Kentucky. TSU will look to win two in a row for the first time this season.
Redshirt junior Tia Wooten is leading the team with an OVC best 21.3 points per game while freshman Taylor Roberts averages 14.9 points per outing. Kaliya Griffin (8.6 ppg) is the third leading scorer for the Lady Tigers. Wooten and Roberts also lead the team in rebounding.
As a team, TSU is averaging 69.0 points per game while shooting 37.5 from the field and 31.2 percent from three-point range. The Lady Tigers are shooting 74.6 from the free-throw line.
In the OVC rankings, TSU is second in free-throw percentage and third in steals and offensive rebounding.
LAST TIME OUT: Tennessee State won the game in the final moments against Eastern Kentucky when Taylor Roberts made two crucial free-throws to put the Lady Tigers on top, 59-58, on with six seconds on the clock. TSU also came away with a huge stop to secure the win. Roberts finished with 19 points while Tia Wooten added 14. Jaden Wrightsell pulled down 10 rebounds.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT: Belmont (22-3, 12-0 OVC) is riding a 13-game winning streak and sits on top of the conference standings. The Bruins have not dropped a league game and are recently coming off an 83-62 victory over Morehead State on the road. BU has only fell to Oklahoma, Stanford and Wright State this season. Belmont scores 78.6 points per game and shoots 47.2 percent from the field, including 36.6 percent from three-point range. Kylee Smith leads the team in scoring with 17.5 ppg while Darby Maggard (16.9 ppg) and Sally McCabe (14.6 ppg) round out the top three scorers.
SERIES INFORMATION: Tennessee State will face Belmont for the 41st time in the series history with the Bruins holding a 29-11 lead. BU claimed both of last year’s contests and has won five straight over TSU. The last time the Lady Tigers beat the Bruins was in 2015, the year TSU won the OVC Tournament Championship.
