GAMEDAY: The Tennessee State women’s basketball team returns to the road for a two-game stint beginning at Eastern Illinois on Thursday, Jan. 11. Game time for the OVC contest is set for 8:30 p.m. in Lantz Arena.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE: Tennessee State (3-10, 1-3 OVC) snapped a four-game losing skid and picked up its first OVC win of the season with a 76-66 victory over Tennessee Tech last week. TSU is still looking for its first road win of the season.
Redshirt junior Tia Wooten is leading the team with an OVC best 21.5 points per game while freshman Taylor Roberts averages 15.5 points per outing. Freshman Jaden Wrightsell (8.0 ppg) is the third leading scorer on the team. Wooten and Roberts also lead the team in rebounding.
As a team, TSU is averaging 68.8 points per game while shooting 38.1 from the field and 30.0 percent from three-point range. The Lady Tigers are shooting 72.2 from the free-throw line.
Tia Wooten is ranked 17th in the nation in scoring while TSU is ranked 23rd in turnovers forced and 18th in free-throws made.
LAST TIME OUT: Tennessee State had a strong showing against Tennessee Tech to earn its first OVC win of the season. TSU defeated TTU, 76-66, in the Gentry Center. The Lady Tigers knocked down seven three-pointers and shot a season-high 52.2 percent from the field and an impressive 63.6 percent from three-point range. Tia Wooten led TSU with 26 points while Jaden Wrightsell added 12 points. Maxine Beard dished out six assists while Kaliya Griffin recorded three steals.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT: Eastern Illinois (1-14, 0-4 OVC) is currently on a 12-game losing skid and is most recently coming off a, 72-61, loss to Eastern Kentucky. Grace Lennox leads the team in scoring with 15.4 points per game while EIU turns in 60.4 points per outing. The Panthers are shooting 36.5 percent from the field and 31.1 percent from three-point range.
SERIES INFORMATION: Tennessee State will match up with Eastern Illinois for the 42nd time in the series history with the Panthers Eagles holding a 28-13 lead. Last year, Tennessee State won the only meeting between the teams, 69-58, in Gentry Center. TSU has won three straight against EIU.
