GAMEDAY: In the first game of the year, the Tennessee State University women’s basketball team will return to Nashville to host Jacksonville State in Ohio Valley Conference action on Thursday. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.  

THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE: Tennessee State (2-9, 0-2 OVC) is still searching for its first OVC win of the season. The Lady Tigers are most recently coming off a tough, 71-66, loss to Southeast Missouri on Saturday.

Redshirt junior Tia Wooten (20.5 ppg) and Freshman Taylor Roberts (16.1 ppg) lead the team in scoring while Kaliya Griffin (7.5 ppg) and Jaden Wrightsell (7.5 ppg) rounds out the top scorers for TSU. Wooten (7.6 rpg) and Roberts (7.5 rpg) are the team’s leading rebounders.

As a team, TSU is averaging 69.3 ppg while shooting 38.2 percent from the field. The Lady Tigers are shooting 70.5 percent from the free-throw line while struggling from beyond the arc (.288).

TSU is 4th in the Ohio Valley Conference in offensive rebounding and 4th in steals.

The Lady Tigers are under the direction of first year head coach Jessica Kern.

LAST TIME OUT: In a game that wasn’t decided until the final 60 seconds, Tennessee State fell to Southeast Missouri, 71-66, Saturday on the road. TSU trailed SEMO by 13 points before rallying to tie the game with 47 seconds left. SEMO scored what was ultimately the game winning bucket on its next possession and TSU was not able to respond. Tia Wooten led TSU with 30 points to go with eight rebounds while Jaden Wrightsell posted a double-double (13 pts, 10 reb) in her first career start.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT: Jacksonville State (8-5, 2-0 OVC) has won two straight and is coming off a 70-64 win over Morehead State. As a team, JSU is averaging 63.8 points per game while shooting 38.0 percent from the field. The Gamecocks are holding opponents to 55.7 points per outing. Rayven Pearson (9.9 ppg) leads JSU in scoring while Gretchen Morrison (9.0 ppg) is the team’s second scorer.

SERIES INFORMATION: Tennessee State will match up with Jacksonville State for the 33rd with the series tied at 16-16. Last season the team’s split with each team winning on its own floor.
