GAMEDAY: The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team will officially begin Ohio Valley Conference play on the road at UT Martin on Thursday, Dec. 28. Game time for the league opener is set for 3 p.m. in Elam Center.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE: Tennessee State (2-7) concluded non-conference action on Dec. 21 against Marshall. Despite erasing a 31-point deficit, TSU fell to the Thundering Herd, 71-65, at home.
Redshirt junior Tia Wooten (19.2 ppg) and Freshman Taylor Roberts (16.6 ppg) lead the team in scoring while Kaliya Griffin (7.2 ppg) rounds out the top three scorers for TSU. Roberts (7.6 rpg) and Wooten (7.4 rpg) are the team’s leading rebounders.
As a team, TSU is averaging 69.8 ppg while shooting 38.0 percent from the field. The Lady Tigers are shooting 68.3 percent from the free-throw line while struggling from beyond the arc (.280).
TSU is second in the Ohio Valley Conference in offensive rebounding and 4th in steals.
The Lady Tigers are under the direction of first year head coach Jessica Kern.
LAST TIME OUT: TSU showed fight and determination in the last outing against Marshall. After a slow start and falling behind by 31 points in the first half, TSU battled from behind and pulled to within six. The Lady Tigers, however, fell to the Thundering Herd, 71-65, at home. Freshman Taylor Roberts finished the game with a career-high 27 points while Tia Wooten added 13.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT: UT Martin (4-8) has dropped three straight, including its most recent loss to Eastern Washington in the Basketball Travelers Inc. Invitational. A last second shot sank the Skyhawks, 61-58, in the tournament finale. As a team, UTM averages 71.0 points per game while shooting 42.1 percent from the field and 34.5 percent from three-point range. Kendall Spray leads the team in scoring with 17.7 ppg while Emanye Robertson (11.8 ppg) and Janekia Mason (10.1 ppg) also average double-digits in scoring.
SERIES INFORMATION: Tennessee State and UT Martin will meet for the 62nd time in the series history with UTM holding a 31-30 advantage. TSU claimed last year’s meeting in the Gentry Center after defeating the Skyhawks, 85-80, in overtime. UTM has claimed six out of the last nine meetings.
