GAMEDAY: The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team will play the final non-conference game of the regular season on Thursday, Dec.21 with a match-up against Marshall University. Game time is set for 6 p.m. in the Gentry Center.

THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE: Tennessee State picked up its second consecutive home win last week with a hard-fought victory over Lipscomb. TSU defeated LU, 71-64, to improve to 2-6 on the season. 

Redshirt junior Tia Wooten (20.0 ppg) and Freshman Taylor Roberts (15.3 ppg) lead the team in scoring while Kaliya Griffin (7.8 ppg) rounds out the top three scorers for TSU. Wooten (7.9 rpg) and Roberts (7.9 rpg) are the team’s leading rebounders.

As a team, TSU is averaging 70.4 ppg while shooting 38.3 percent from the field. The Lady Tigers are shooting 68.6 percent from the free-throw line while struggling from beyond the arc (.281).

TSU is second in the Ohio Valley Conference in offensive rebounding and 5th in steals.

LAST TIME OUT: In a hard fought, back-and-forth battle, Tennessee State used a strong fourth quarter to defeat Lipscomb, 71-64, at home. The Lady Tigers used a 10-5 run down the stretch to secure the win. Taylor Roberts led TSU with 18 points to go with eight rebounds while Tia Wooten added 16. Kaliya Griffin registered 13 points while Asia Sims pulled down 11 rebounds. TSU outrebounded its opponent, 42-27, and held the edge in bench points, 25-11.  

ABOUT THE OPPONENT: Marshall (4-7) is most recently coming off a dominating, 111-38, win over NAIA opponent Kentucky Christian. Prior to the victory, the Thundering Herd had dropped two straight. Shayna Gore leads Marshall in scoring with 17.2 points per game while Talequia Hamilton (14.4 ppg) also averages double-digits. Asheika Alexander (9.4 ppg) is posted just under 10 points per game. As a team, the Herd average 68.9 points per game while shooting 44.2 percent from the field, including 32.1 percent from three-point range.

SERIES INFORMATION: Tennessee State and Marshall will meet for the fourth time in the series history with Marshall leading 3-0. The last time the teams faced each other was during the 2008-09 season. The Herd defeated the Lady Tigers 78-56 in Huntington, W. Va.
