GAMEDAY: After playing the final non-conference road game of the season on Tuesday, the Tennessee State women’s basketball team returns to Nashville to host cross-town opponent Lipscomb University Friday, Dec. 15. Game time is set for 6 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE: Tennessee State picked up its first win of the season against Fisk before falling to No. 3 Louisville, 95-56, on the road this week. TSU is now 1-6 on the season.
Redshirt junior Tia Wooten (20.6 ppg) and Freshman Taylor Roberts (14.9 ppg) lead the team in scoring while Kaliya Griffin (7.0 ppg) rounds out the top three scorers for TSU. Wooten (8.0 rpg) and Roberts (7.9 rpg) are the team’s leading rebounders.
As a team, TSU is averaging 70.3 ppg while shooting 37.5 percent from the field. The Lady Tigers are shooting 67.9 percent from the free-throw line while struggling from beyond the arc (.266).
TSU is second in the Ohio Valley Conference in offensive rebounding and 5th in steals.
The Lady Tigers are under the direction of first year head coach Jessica Kern.
LAST TIME OUT: Tennessee State played hard but ultimately fell to No. 3 Louisville, 95-56, Tuesday night in KFC Yum! Center. Freshman Taylor Williams knocked down five three-pointers and led TSU with 17 points while Tia Wooten tallied 12. The Lady Tigers made eight triples in the game but struggled from the free-throw line, only connecting 8-of-15. Wooten, Williams and Taylor Roberts each registered five rebounds.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT: Cross-town opponent Lipscomb is 2-8 on the season. The Bisons have dropped four straight, most recently falling to Alabama, 73-51, on the road. Lipscomb has already faced four other OVC schools (Murray State, Austin Peay, Morehead State, Belmont) and will play Tennessee Tech later this month. As a team, Lipscomb averages 57.2 points per game while shooting 35 percent from the field and 29.9 percent from three-point range. Loren Cagle leads the team in scoring with 14.8 ppg while Emily Kmec (9.9 ppg) and Riley Northway (8.9 ppg) round out the top three scorers. .
SERIES INFORMATION: Tennessee State and Lipscomb will meet for the 26th time in the series history with the Lady Tigers leading, 21-4. TSU claimed last year’s meeting 77-71 (OT) in Allen Arena and has won three straight. TSU has also won four out of the last five contests. Lipscomb’s last victory was an 81-78 decision in overtime on Nov. 26, 2013 in Gentry Center.
