NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team dropped a, 68-60, decision to Belmont in the opening round of the OVC Tournament Wednesday afternoon in Municipal Auditorium.
After trailing by as many as 14 points in the first quarter, TSU battled from behind to pull within one. The Lady Tigers, however, were unable to complete the comeback.
Brianna Lawrence led TSU (12-18) with a team-high 22 points in her final game as a Lady Tiger while Jayda Johnson scored 17. Maxine Beard posted a career-high nine points and went 4-of-7 from the field.
Belmont (22-8) was led in scoring by Sally McCabe’s 18 points while Darby Maggard registered 16.
Maxine Beard and Jayda Johnson combined for TSU’s first 10 points of the game and the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 10-6 lead. Following a defensive change by the opponent, the TSU offense struggled and went 0-of-10 from the field over the next six minutes. During the drought, the Lady Tigers fell behind, 22-10.
Brianna Lawrence ended the skid in the second period with a slicing layup in the paint but another four minutes without a bucket kept TSU behind by double-digits.
The Lady Tigers were down, 26-12, when Brianna Lawrence beat her opponent on the baseline and scored a layup. The bucket sparked a 9-1 run that included five points from Maxine Beard and pulled TSU to within six.
Tennessee State trailed 27-21 at the break.
The Lady Tigers continued to chip away at the deficit in the second half and used a 7-2 spurt to slice the Bruin lead to one, 29-28. The score was, 36-35, in favor of the Bruins when an 11-2 run by the opponent put them back on top by double-digits. BU led 49-39 heading into the final frame.
In the final 10-minutes of regulation, a bumpy start consisting of turnovers and empty possessions hampered the Lady Tigers comeback attempt.
With 4:28 left in the fourth quarter, I’mani Davis drove down the lane to score her first points of the game. On the ensuing possession, BU sank a three-pointer to move ahead, 60-45.
Late in the game, Brianna Lawrence drained a couple of three-pointers before Jordan Brightwell scored to make it, 65-57. Eight points would be as close as the Lady Tigers would get.
Despite only committing nine turnovers, Tennessee State lost the battle of the boards, 44-32. TSU shot 37.9 percent (25-of-66) from the field, including 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from three-point range. The Lady Tigers went 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.
