The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team will begin Ohio Valley Conference Tournament play on Wednesday, March 2 versus No. 2 Belmont. Game time for the first round match-up is slated for 2 p.m. in Municipal Auditorium.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Tennessee State had won two straight before dropping the regular season finale to Belmont at home on Sunday. The Lady Tigers fell to the Bruins, 71-51, in the Gentry Center. TSU finished the regular season with an overall record of 12-17 (7-9 OVC) and earned the seventh seed for the OVC Tournament.
Jayda Johnson leads the Lady Tigers in scoring with 15.6 points per game while grabbing 6.8 rebounds per game. I’mani Davis averages 12.7 ppg and 7.8 rpg while Brianna Lawrence rounds out the top scorers with 11.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per outing.
As a team, TSU is averaging 61.6 points per game while shooting 36.0 percent from the field and 29.5 percent from three-point range. From the free-throw line, TSU is shooting 66.8 percent.
The Lady Tigers are led by fourth year head coach and Hall of Famer, Larry Joe Inman.
LAST TIME OUT
Tennessee State trailed by two at the break but got outscored, 21-9, in the third quarter to fall into a hole. The Lady Tigers played better in the fourth period but the deficit was too much to overcome. TSU only managed a 32.8 field goal percentage, including a dismal 14.3 percent (1-of-7) from three-point range while Belmont made nearly half (49.1 percent) of its shots and out rebounded TSU, 40-31. Jayda Johnson finished the game with a team high 20 points while Brianna Lawrence chipped in 15.
Belmont (21-8, 13-3 OVC) has won 13 of its last 14 games and entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed. The Bruins closed the regular season out with a, 71-51, win over Tennessee State on Sunday.
Kylee Smith leads Belmont in scoring with 13.9 points per game while Darby Maggard (12.4 ppg) and Sally McCable (11.7 ppg) also register double-digits in scoring.
As a team, the Bruins average 74.1 points per game while shooting 44.5 percent from the field and 37.0 percent from three-point range. Belmont’s only league losses this season were to SEMO, SIUE and UTM.
TSU and BU will match up for the 38th time with the Bruins holding a 27-10 lead in the series. Belmont claimed both regular meetings this season, with a 80-65, win in the Curb Event Center on Jan. 23 and a 71-51 victory in the Gentry Center. Wednesday will mark the first time that TSU and Belmont will meet in the OVC Tournament
LAST TIME THEY MET
TSU struggled on the offensive end the entire night and couldn’t overcome a nine-point third quarter in a, 71-51, loss to Belmont. Jadya Johnson (20) and Brianna Lawrence (15) were the only Lady Tigers to reach double-digits in scoring while Belmont had five players to score in double-figures. Sally McCabe paced the Bruins with 13 points while Lauren Thompson (12), Ellie Harmeyer (10), Sierra Jones (10), and Frankie Joubran (10) chipped in.
