BELMONT (12-7, 4-2 OVC)
SUNDAY, JAN. 24 | 2 P.M. | CURB EVENT CENTER | NASHVILLE, TN
The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 24 at Belmont. Game time for the OVC match-up is slated for 2 p.m. in the Curb Event Center. The contest was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved due to inclement weather in Nashville.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Tennessee State (9-10) saw its four-game winning streak come to an end after falling to Tennessee Tech on the road Thursday. The loss dropped the Lady Tigers to 4-2 in the OVC. While holding a perfect 7-0 record at home, TSU has struggled on the road. The Lady Tigers are 1-7 in away games.
Juniors Jayda Johnson (14.7 ppg) and I’mani Davis (13.9ppg) lead TSU in scoring while senior Brianna Lawrence (10.8 ppg) rounds out the top three scorers. These three upperclassmen also lead the Lady Tigers in rebounding.
As a team, TSU is averaging 62.2 points per game and shooting 35.7 percent from the field, including 29.2 percent from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line.
The Lady Tigers are led by fourth year head coach and Hall of Famer, Larry Joe Inman.
LAST TIME OUT
For the fifth consecutive game, Tennessee State saw a double-digit lead disappear in the second half. This time, unlike the previous four games, TSU was unable to hold off its opponents late rally and fell to Tennessee Tech, 70-60, on the road. TSU led for nearly the entire game but TTU took its first lead of the game with 1:22 left and never relinquished it. I’mani Davis led TSU with 22 points while Brianna Lawrence added 18.
Belmont (12-7, 4-2 OVC) dropped its first two OVC games but has since won four straight, including its most recent, 44-32, victory over Jacksonville State on the road.
The Bruins are led in scoring by Kylee Smith who averages 13.2 points per game. Darby Maggard (12.1 ppg) and Sally McCabe (11.7 ppg) also average double-digits for Belmont.
As a team, BU averages 73.1 points per game while shooting 45.1 percent from the field and 37.6 percent from three-point range. The Bruins connect 71.0 percent of their free-throw attempts.
Kylee Smith and Darby Maggard are the reigning OVC Newcomer and Freshmen of the Week, respectively.
TSU and Belmont will match up for the 36th time with the Bruins holding a 25-10 lead. The teams split last season’s meeting as each team won on the other’s floor. BU claimed the first meeting, 64-62, in Gentry Center before the Lady Tigers downed the Bruins, 70-53, in the Curb Event Center.
Updates on the game will be available throughout the game on the official twitter page via @TSU_Tigers. Links for live stats, video and audio will also be available on tsutigers.com.
TSU will continue its road stint with a contest at UT Martin on Wednesday, Jan. 27. Game time is set for 6 p.m. in Skyhawk Arena. TSU and UT Martin will match up for the 60th time in the series history with UTM holding a 30-29 advantage. The Skyhawks claimed the only regular season meeting between the two teams, 64-58, in the Gentry Center. But TSU knocked off the favorites in the OVC Championship, 64-60, in overtime.
