Following a six-game road stint, the Tennessee State University women’s basketball team will return to action on Saturday against SIU Edwardsville in a rematch of last year’s OVC Tournament semifinals game. The conference tilt is set for 5:30 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Tennessee State snapped a five-game losing streak on Wednesday with a 62-53 road victory over Eastern Illinois. TSU moved to 1-1 in the OVC and 6-9 overall. TSU is 4-0 at home and 1-7 in away games this season.
Juniors Jayda Johnson (13.9) and I’mani Davis (13.0 ppg) lead TSU in scoring while senior Brianna Lawrence (9.9 ppg) rounds out the top three scorers. These three upperclassmen also lead the Lady Tigers in rebounding.
As a team, TSU is averaging 60.9 points per game and shooting 34.8 percent from the field, including 27.6 percent from beyond the arc and 65.2 percent from the free-throw line.
The Lady Tigers are led by fourth year head coach and Hall of Famer, Larry Joe Inman.

Tennessee State shook off a slow start and rallied in the second half to defeat Eastern Illinois, 62-53, Wednesday afternoon in Lantz Arena. TSU struggled to gain its momentum but picked up the tempo in the second stanza and took control of the game. Jayda Johnson led TSU with 21 points and 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season while Samantha Palma notched her first career double-double with 15 points and 10 boards. Guards Brianna Lawrence and I’mani Davis also pulled down double-digit rebounds with 11 and 10, respectively.
ABOUT SIU EDWARDSVILLE
SIU Edwardsville (8-8, 3-0 OVC) has won three straight contests, including its most recent victory over Belmont. The Cougars defeated the Bruins, 73-60, at home. Shronda Butts led all scorers with 32 points while Gwen Adams (18) and Lauren White (11) also reached double figures. SIUE also has victories over Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech.
The Cougars are led in scoring by Butts’ 20.8 ppg and Adams’ 10.4 points per outing. Donshel Beck grabs an average of 7.0 rpg.
As a team, SIUE average 68.8 ppg while shooting 39.8 percent from the field and 32.1 percent from three-point range. SIUE was selected as the preseason favorite to finish the OVC race in first place.
TSU will match up with SIUE for the 8th time in the series history with the Cougars leading, 5-2. TSU claimed the last meeting between the two teams, upsetting SIUE, 71-59, in the semifinals of last year’s OVC tournament. Prior to that, TSU had dropped five straight to SIUE. The Cougars’ claimed last year’s regular season meeting, 57-44.

The Lady Tigers will remain at home for continued OVC action against Austin Peay on Thursday, Jan. 14. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. in the Gentry Center. TSU and Austin Peay will match up for the 61st time with APSU leading, 32-28. TSU claimed last year’s meeting 81-78 in overtime (1/17/15). TSU has won five straight as APSU’s last win was a 74-66 victory on 2/12/11.
