The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team will continue its road slate at Big Ten member Illinois on Tuesday, Nov. 24 in the last game before the Thanksgiving holiday. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Parkland College.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Tennessee State (1-2) is coming off a, 79-70, overtime loss to Southern Illinois on Saturday in the final game of the Preseason WNIT Consolation Round. The Lady Tigers defeated Alabama State, 74-64, in the first round game on Friday to pick up their first win of the season.
After three games, TSU is led in scoring by junior I’mani Davis (14.3 ppg), senior Brianna Lawrence (12.3 ppg) and junior Jayda Johnson (11.0 ppg). Lawrence also leads the team in rebounding with 8.7 per outing. Junior Diamond Beatty is averaging just under double-digits with 9.7 ppg while shooting 46.7 percent from three-point range.
As a team, TSU is averaging 66.7 points per game and shooting 32.9 percent from the field, including 29.3 from beyond the arc.
The Lady Tigers are led by fourth year head coach and Hall of Famer, Larry Joe Inman.
LAST TIME OUT
Tennessee State battled the entire night but ran out of steam down the stretch. The Lady Tigers had a 10-point lead at one point but eventually fell to the Salukis in overtime, 79-70, to finish out the Preseason Season WNIT with a 1-2 record. I’mani Davis led the team with 19 points and eight rebounds. Jayda Johnson, who hit the three-pointer to force overtime, finished with 14 points. Freshman Tiana Parker (11) and sophomore Sam Palma (10) also scored in double-digits. Diamond Beatty knocked down three triples in the contest while Brianna Lawrence had eight steals.
Illinois (3-0) has won its first three games with the most recent victory coming over OVC member UT Martin, 94-74, in Champaign. Three players posted at least 20 points in the win. Chatrice White led all scorers with 26 while Ciera Rice scored 21. Alex Wittinger had 20 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Chatrice White (20.3 ppg), Cierra Rice (13.0 ppg), Kyley Simmons (10.7 ppg) are the leading scorers for Illinois. White (9.7 rpg) and Sarah Hartwell (6.7 rpg) lead the team in rebounds.
As a team, the Fighting Illini are shooting 44.5 percent from the field including 35.4 percent from three-point range.
TSU will match up with Illinois for the first time in the series history.
