The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team will close out 2014 with a road contest at SEC member Kentucky on Sunday Dec. 28. Game time for the non-conference match-up is slated for 2 p.m. in Memorial Coliseum.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Tennessee State (3-7) will see its first action since Dec. 20 with the contest at Kentucky. TSU has won two of its last three but is coming off a, 75-71, loss to Troy at home a week ago.
Chelsea Hudson is leading the team in scoring with 14.2 points and a team second-best 6.9 rpg. Briana Morrow is leading the team in rebounds with 7.5 rpg while Rachel Allen (7.8 ppg) and Brianna Lawrence (7.2 ppg) round out the top three scorers.
As a team, TSU is shooting 36.9 percent from the field while averaging 61.4 points per outing. The Lady Tigers have struggled shooting from the free-throw line, only connecting on 56.9 percent of their attempts to start the season.
The Lady Tigers are led by third year head coach and Hall of Famer, Larry Joe Inman.
LAST TIME OUT
The game went down to the final seconds but TSU wasn’t able to pull off the win in a 75-71 loss to Troy at home. Jayda Johnson came off the bench to record 15 points and six rebounds while Chelsea Hudson just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. I’mani Davis finished the game with 10 points. The Lady Tigers won the battle of the boards, 57-48 and shot 40.3 percent from the field (compared to the Trojans’ 36.5 %) but committed 29 turnovers. TSU also shot a dismal 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from the free-throw line.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Kentucky is off to a 10-2 start to begin the season. The SEC member had won six straight before falling to No. 13 Duke on the road, 89-68, on Sunday, Dec. 21. Prior to the loss, UK was ranked No. 8.
Four players average double-digits in scoring for the Wildcats led by Jennifer O’Neil’s 15.2 points per game. Makaya Epps (13.2 ppg), Janee Thompson (10.2 ppg) and Linnae Harper (10.2 ppg) also turn in double-digits.
UK shoots 40.8 percent from the field but only 27.7 percent from three-point range. The Wildcats average 78.9 points, 42.8 rebounds and 18.2 turnovers per outing.
UK holds a 3-0 series lead over TSU. In the last meeting between to two programs, the Wildcats defeated the Lady Tigers, 105-45 (12/22/05).
TSU will officially begin Ohio Valley Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015. The Lady Tigers will host Southeast Missouri in the Gentry Center at 5:30 p.m.
