Lady Tigers Host Trojans on Saturday
The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team will play the its second contest in three days on Saturday, Dec. 20 against Troy. The non-conference match-up is scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Tennessee State (3-6) won its second straight game Thursday night against Jacksonville. The, 64-61, victory was the first home win of the season for TSU. The Lady Tigers hope to carry the momentum into Saturday’s contest and extend the win streak to three games.
Chelsea Hudson is leading the team in scoring with 14.4 points and a team second-best 6.7 rpg. Briana Morrow is leading the team in rebounds with 7.6 rpg while Rachel Allen (8.0 ppg) and Brianna Lawrence (7.2 ppg) round out the top three scorers.
As a team, TSU is shooting 36.5 percent from the field while averaging 60.3 points per outing. The Lady Tigers have struggled shooting from the free-throw line, only connecting on 58.7 percent of their attempts to start the season.
The Lady Tigers are led by third year head coach and Hall of Famer, Larry Joe Inman.
LAST TIME OUT
TSU picked up its first home win of the season in a tightly contested victory over Jacksonville Thursday night in the Gentry Center. Four players scored in double-digits led by Chelsea Hudson’s 21 points. I’mani Davis (12), Brianna Lawrence (11) and Rachel Allen (10) each posted double figures while Briana Morrow hauled in eight rebounds. TSU outrebounded JU, 42-33, and forced the opponent into 22 turnovers.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Troy (4-4) is coming off a, 94-85, loss to Evansville on the road Thursday night. The Trojans shot 43.6 percent from the field and had three players score at least 15 points but it wasn’t enough. Ronita Garrett notched a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds while Rachel Reid (22) and Brianna Lancaster (15) registered double-figures.
Garrett leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 15. 3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. A. Beverley-Kelley (13.1 ppg) and Rachel Reid (8.4 ppg) round out the top scorers for Troy.
Troy shoots 38.8 percent from the field but only 25.7 percent from three-point range. The Trojans average 72.9 points, 42.4 rebounds and 19.8 turnovers per game.
TSU holds a 1-0 series lead over Troy. The Lady Tigers defeated the Trojans, 77-71, last season in the first meeting between the two teams.
