Edwardsville, Ill. --- The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team dropped its first OVC contest of the season, 91-83, to SIUE Saturday night in the Vadalabene Center.
After trailing by double-digits, Tennessee State battle from behind to pull within three but couldn’t complete the comeback.
SIUE (8-9, 3-1 OVC) was led in scoring by Gwen Adams with 26 points. Shronda Butts (22), Tierny Austin (14), Micah Jones (12) and Donshel Beck (11) also notched double-digits.
Both teams traded buckets until TSU suffered a four-minute scoring drought that saw the Lady Tigers fall behind, 31-19, with about five minutes left in the opening half.
TSU stayed within striking distance and cut the deficit down to seven on an old fashioned three-point play by Chelsea Hudson with :25 seconds on the clock. SIUE scored on the next possession to carry a 41-32 at the halftime break.
The second half was an uphill battle for the Lady Tigers. TSU fell behind 53-40 before a 10-0 rally sparked by timely buckets and defensive pressure sliced the deficit down to just three points.
For the next several possessions, the Lady Tigers worked to close the gap. The deficit hovered around three and four points for a while but the Cougars managed to build the lead back up to double-digits.
TSU continued to fight but was never able to get over the hump.
Tennessee State shot 45.5 percent from the field and only committed 14 turnovers. The Lady Tigers struggled from the free-throw line, however, only connecting on 66.7 of their attempts.
SIU Edwardsville made 51.0 percent of its field goals and went 35-of-38 (92.1 percent) from the charity stripe.
TSU returns to action on January 15 at Murray State.
