100 Moments: Swift Helps TSU Make History

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues by recognizing one of the premier women's basketball players in Tennessee State history.

As a member of the Tennessee State University Women's Basketball program, Connie Swift was a well-rounded player. She was a force to be reckoned with on both the defensive and offensive ends.  As a freshman she led the team in scoring with 527 points averaging 19.5 points per game. As a junior she passed her personal season high with 550 points averaging 20.4 points per game.

Throughout her career, she led the team in rebounds each year with a total of 885, averaging 9.3 her senior year. Competitors constantly fouled her but she never let her teammates down.  She led the team in free throw percentage as a freshman, junior and senior, but her teammate Carolyn Aldridge led in the 94-95 season. As a senior, Swift led the team in steals averaging 2.9 per game.

Swift also led the team in field goal percentages each year at TSU making 726 field goals out of 1,283 attempts.

While at TSU, Swift was coached by Teresa Phillips. Swift was named the OVC All-Freshman Team, twice to the OVC First and Second Team and is also a two time OVC Tournament MVP.  She led the Lady Tigers to two OVC Tournament Championships and two NCAA tournament appearances (1994 & 1995).

Connie Swift is TSU's All-Time Career Leading Scorer with 2,054 points.  Her senior year she added a 30-point game to her accomplishments against Central Michigan University. Swift was added to the 40- point club when she scored 40 points against Tennessee Temple in the 1996-97 season.

In 2010, Connie Swift and Sharron Jarrett became the first two women's basketball players to be inducted into the TSU Sports Hall of Fame.

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments. TSU has so many great moments, not all can be represented in these 100.
