WBB returns to action on the road at Eastern Illinois

The Tennessee State University women's basketball team returns to action on Monday, Jan. 23 with an Ohio Valley Conference contest at Eastern Illinois University. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
Tennessee State (7-12, 3-4 OVC) snapped a two-game home losing streak in an, 86-80, overtime win over Morehead State Thursday night in the Gentry Center. TSU trailed late in the game before clawing from behind to force overtime. The Lady Tigers outscored the Eagles, 10-4, in the extra frame to capture the win. TSU has won two of its last four contests and is 1-2 on the road in conference play.   

As a team, TSU is averaging 68.5 points per outing while shooting 37.3 percent from the field and 28.5 percent from beyond the arc. TSU is currently shooting only 64.6 percent from the free-throw line while committing an average of 19.5 turnovers per game.

TSU averages 43.4 rebounds, 12.9 assists and 8.6 steals per game.

Tennessee State saw a, 39-32, halftime lead disappear  after Morehead State opened the second frame with a 17-2 run but the Lady Tigers rallied late to force overtime. In the extra frame, TSU outscored the visitors, 10-4, to capture the win. Jasmin Shuler tallied a career-high 38 points while Avery Jones nearly recorded a double-double with 12 points and nine boards. Kesi Hess finished the game with 10 points. TSU had lost five straight to MSU, dating back three seasons, before the, 86-80, overtime win.

Eastern Illinois (14-4, 5-0 OVC) has won seven straight contests and remains undefeated in Ohio Valley Conference action.  The Panthers are most recently coming off an, 80-46, win over Austin Peay. EIU also has wins over UT Martin, Murray State, SIUE and Southeast Missouri. 

In EIU's win over UTM, Ta'Keyna Nixon posted 21 points. Sydney Mitchell added 16 points and Jordyne Crunk added 15 points. Nixon also led the team with nine rebounds. Against APSU, Pressley lead the team with 13 points and 10 rebounds. 

Overall, the Panthers average 71.6 points per game behind a .419 field goal percentage (.303 three-point range). Ta'Kenya Nixon leads the team with 14.9 points per game while Mariah King follows with 13.8 ppg. Sydney Mitchell rounds out the top three scorers for the Panther with 10.8 points per outing.

Tennessee State and Eastern Illinois will meet for the 35th time in the series history with EIU leading, 24-10. The Panthers swept the series last season, as TSU fell to EIU, 78-57, on the road before dropping a 69-54 decision in the Gentry Center. TSU has not beat EIU since the 2006-07 season as the Panthers have won 12 straight.

Jasmin Shuler leads TSU in scoring with 15.5 ppg while Tayla Foster (11.5 ppg) and Destiney Gaston (8.1 ppg) round out the top three scorers for the Lady Tigers. Foster is pulling down a team-best 5.6 rebounds per game while Gaston averages 4.8 caroms per outing. Rachel Allen leads the team in assists while Gaston also paces TSU with 25 blocks.

The Lady Tigers will make the short trip to Austin Peay to face the Lady Govs on Saturday, Jan. 28. Game time is slated for 5:15 in the Dunn Center.
