Eastern Kentucky up next for Lady Tigers



Tennessee State will continue Ohio Valley Conference action on Saturday, Dec. 31 when the Lady Tigers close out the year on the road at Eastern Kentucky. Game time is slated for a 4:00 p.m. (est) start at McBrayer Arena. 


Tennessee State (5-8) snapped a three-game losing skid on Thursday when the Lady Tigers defeated Austin Peay, 95-81, in the OVC opener. The win marked the most points TSU has scored in a game since a 99-41 win over Cumberland in the 2008-09 season. 

As a team, TSU is averaging 66.5 points per outing while shooting 36.8 percent from the field and 28.9 percent from beyond the arc. TSU is currently shooting only 62.0 percent from the free-throw line while committing an average of 20.3 turnovers per game.

TSU averages 41.9 rebounds, 12.9 assists and 8.3 steals per game. 


Tennessee State snapped a three-game skid by defeating Austin Peay, 95-81, at home in the OVC opener. The Lady Tigers trailed early but used a 10-2 run to take the lead before another 15-3 spurt gave TSU control of the game. TSU led by as many as 16 before going on to win. Four Lady TIgers scored in double-digits led by Tayla Foster (22) and Jasmin Shuler (21). Destiney Gaston recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Rachel Allen had 15 points and seven rebounds. 


Eastern Kentucky (5-6, 1-0 OVC) has won three of their last four contests including its most recent win over Jacksonville State. The Lady Colonels have not had a game since they defeated the Gamecocks, 80-76, in overtime in the OVC opener on Dec. 20. 

In EKU's win over JSU, Raechele Gray led the team with 18 points. Alex Jones had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Marie Carpenter also scored 15. Jade Barber finished the game with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Overall, the Lady Colonels average 64.9 points per game behind a .393 field goal percentage (.317 three-point range). Marie Carpenter leads the team in scoring with 13.6 ppg while Alex Jones (10.5 ppg) and Jade Barber (10.3 ppg) round out the top scorers for EKU. Barber grabs a team-best 7.7 rebounds per outing as Jones hauls in 7.5 rpg. 


Tennessee State and Eastern Kentucky will meet for the 49th time in the long series history, with EKU holding a 33-15 lead over TSU. Last season, TSU and EKU split the season series with each team winning on its home court.  The Lady TIgers defeated the Lady Colonels 62-52 in the Gentry Center before falling to EKU, 86-91 on the road a month later.

Jasmin Shuler leads TSU in scoring with 15.3 ppg while Tayla Foster (10.0 ppg) , Destiney Gaston (8.8 ppg) and Kesi Hess (6.6 ppg) round out the top four scorers for the Lady Tigers. Gaston is pulling down a team-best 4.9 rebounds per game while Foster averages 4.5 caroms per outing. Rachel Allen leads the team in assists while Gaston also paces TSU with 19 blocks.


The Lady TIgers will return home to host UT Martin in continued Ohio Valley Conference action on on Monday, Jan. 2. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
