Lady Tigers prepare to host SIU Edwardsville

The Tennessee State University women's basketball team will return to the Gentry Center after two games on the road last week when the Lady Tigers host SIU Edwardsville in Ohio Valley Conference action Saturday night in the first game of a doubleheader. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.

Tennessee State (6-11, 2-3 OVC) went 1-1 last week but has lost six of its last eight contests and will look to get back on track against SIUE this weekend. The Lady Tigers are most recently coming off a road loss to Tennessee Tech, 80-71, Monday night in the Eblen Center. Last Saturday, TSU finally snapped its road losing skid and picked up the first away victory of the season by defeating, Jacksonville State, 67-57, in Pete Mathews Coliseum.

As a team, TSU is averaging 68.6 points per outing while shooting 36.9 percent from the field and 36.9 percent from beyond the arc. TSU is currently shooting only 64.7 percent from the free-throw line while committing an average of 18.9 turnovers per game.

TSU averages 42.7 rebounds, 13.1 assists and 8.6 steals per game.
Tennessee State battled from behind to take the lead against Tennessee Tech early in the second half and played the rest of the frame close until the Golden Eagles used a small spurt to gain control of the game down the stretch. TTU kept TSU at bay and held on to win, 80-71. Tayla Foster led TSU with 20 points and nine rebounds while Avery Jones scored 11 points and tallied eight rebounds.

SIU Edwardsville (8-7, 2-3 OVC) has dropped two straight contests, including its most recent loss to Eastern Illinois, 73-70, at home. SIUE fell to UT Martin, 91-59, on the road a couple days before the loss to EIU. Before the two-game skid, the Cougars had won two straight with victories over Georgia State, Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech.

In SIUE's loss to EIU, Courtney Kenner led the team with 16 points while Raven Berry added 13. Katie Hempen scored 12 points while Michaela Herrod grabbed eight rebounds.

Overall, the Cougars average 64.7 points per game behind a .410 field goal percentage (.335 three-point range). Michaela Herrrod leads the team with 10.5 points per game while Raven Berry (9.9 ppg), Jazmin Hill (9.8 ppg) and Katie Hempen (9.0 ppg) round out the top scorers for SIUE.

Tennessee State and SIU Edwardsville will be meeting for only the third time in the programs' histories. Last season, the teams split the season series as each team protected its home court. TSU fell to SIUE, 70-60, on the road, before defeating the Cougars, 81-71, in the Gentry Center.

In a game that featured ten ties and eight lead changes, TSU used a 16-4 run with six minutes left to take control of the game and defeat SIUE. Foster exploded for a career-high 33 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double while Stafford (14), Morris (11) and Gaston (10) also posted double-figures. Berry led SIUE with 17 points while Decker tallied 16. Kenner had 10 points and Herrod notched 11 rebounds.
