Lady Tigers return home to host Southern Mississippi

GAMEDAY
The Tennessee State University women's basketball team will look to snap a three-game losing skid on Saturday when the Lady Tigers host Southern Mississippi. Game time is slated for 3 p.m. in the Gentry Center.

LADY TIGER REVIEW
Tennessee State has dropped three straight and is coming off an, 80-66, loss to cross-town rival Belmont University on Tuesday.

After battling for most of the game, the Lady Tigers suffered through a couple of untimely scoring droughts down the stretch that helped Belmont pull out the win.

Meredith Stafford led the team with 16 points while Simone Hopes added 15. Avery Jones came off the bench to score 11 points and grab nine rebounds.  

TSU BY THE NUMBERS
Tennessee State is averaging 57.3 points per game while shooting 36.1 percent from the field. The Lady Tigers are shooting .361 from three-point range while posting a .711 percentage from the charity stripe. On average, TSU turns in 11.7 assists, 18.9 turnovers, 7.4 steals, and 2.4 blocks per game.

LADY TIGER LEADERS
Senior Meredith Stafford is the only player averaging double-digits for the Lady Tigers with 11.3 points per game. Tayla Foster (8.1 ppg) and Simone Hopes (7.0 ppg) round out the top three leading scorers for TSU while Hopes (5.9 rpg) and Alana Morris (5.3 rpg) lead the team in rebounding.

SERIES INFORMATION
Tennessee State and Southern Mississippi will meet for only the third time as the Golden Eagles hold a, 2-0, advantage over the Lady Tigers. In the last meeting  between the two teams, USM defeated TSU 79-57 in Hattiesburg, Miss.


UPCOMING SCHEDULE
TSU will return to Ohio Valley Conference action when the Lady Tigers host Morehead State on Jan.19 at 3 p.m. Following that, TSU will face Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 5:30 p.m. both games will be played in the Gentry Center and can be seen on OVCsports.tv.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME AGAINST SOUTHERN MISS. (11/17/08)
Following the opening tip, Tennessee State went for nearly two minutes without scoring a basket and quickly fell behind 6-0. The Lady Tigers got on the board at the 18:03 mark but the Eagles had stretched the advantage to 12-2 before the first media timeout. Two three-pointers and a lay-up swelled the USM lead to 29-7 before went into the break with a commanding 41-15 lead.

TSU outscored USM 42-38 in the second half but it wasn't enough as the Lady Tigers fell to the Golden Eagles, 79-57.
