Lady Tigers gear up for Skyhawks

The Lady Tigers will continue Ohio Valley Conference action on Saturday when they host third place UT Martin in the Gentry Center at 5:30 p.m. TSU will look to win its second straight contest.

Tennessee State is coming off a, 73-70, home win over Murray State Thursday night. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Lady Tigers and gave TSU its third OVC win of the season.

TSU posted 70-plus points for the third consecutive game against Murray State and had two players to post double-digits.

Meredith Stafford finished the game with 16 points and four assists while Tayla Foster posted 12 points and three rebounds.  Simone Hopes just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

Tennessee State is averaging 59.6 points per game while shooting 36.9 percent from the field, including 31.0 percent from three-point range. TSU is averaging 37.4 rebounds and 20.9 turnovers per game. The Lady Tigers turn in 12.0 assists, 7.1 steals, and 2.2 blocks per outing.

LAST TIME OUT: TSU's win over Murray State
The Tennessee State University women's basketball team snapped a seven game losing skid Thursday night with a, 73-70, win over Murray State in the Gentry Center.

Despite giving up nearly a double-digit second half lead, Tennessee State (6-16, 3-9 OVC) was able to defeat Murray State (6-17, 2-10 OVC) and come away with the win. CLICK HERE to read full story

Tennessee Martin had won four straight contests before falling to Austin Peay, 69-61, on Thursday. The Skyhawks are currently in third place in the OVC standings and have two of the top three scorers in the league in Heather Butler (19.6 ppg)  and Jasmine Newsome (17.2 ppg).

UTM is shooting nearly 40 percent (39.4) from the field, including 33 percent from three-point range. The Skyhawks average 69.7 points per outing and shoot 71 percent from the charity stripe.

Tennessee State will match-up with UT Martin for the 53rd time in the two program's histories with the Lady Tigers leading, 28-24. UTM claimed the first meeting of the season in Martin, Tenn. and has won two straight.

Tennessee State could not complete its second half comeback in an, 83-67, loss to UT Martin Saturday night in the Elam Center.

The Lady Tigers rallied to within three points of the Skyhawks after trailing by 20 in the first half but a, 14-2, scoring run put UTM back in control of the game.

Jasmine Shuler led Tennessee State (5-10, 2-4 OVC) in scoring with a season-high 17 points while Tayla Foster added 13 points and seven rebounds. Alana Morris tallied a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with seven assists, two blocks and a steal. CLICK HERE for full story

Lone senior Meredith Stafford is the only Lady Tiger averaging double-digits with 11.8 ppg. Freshman Tayla Foster (10.9 ppg) is the team's second leading scorer while Simone Hopes (5.3 rpg) leads the team in rebounding.
