Nashville --- The Tennessee State University women's basketball team will face Eastern Illinois in the first OVC action of the season on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
After opening the season 0-3, Tennessee State has won two straight contests. The Lady Tigers are coming off of a 72-69 overtime victory against Lipscomb and are looking to extend the win streak to three.
Against Lipscomb, TSU battled back from a 14-point second half deficit to force overtime. Despite missing eight free-throws in the extra period, TSU was able to hold off Lipscomb and pick up the win. Oby Okafor led TSU with 26 points and nine rebounds while Simone Hopes tallied 10 points and eight boards. Senior LaDona Pierce handed out a game best seven assists for TSU.
Okafor, the reigning OVC player of the week, leads the Lady Tigers in scoring (16.2) and rebounding (6.8). She is currently ranked second in the league in scoring and offensive rebounding.
Tennessee State and Eastern Illinois will meet for the 30th time with the Panthers holding a 19-10 lead. Last season, EIU swept the series and defeated TSU in the OVC tournament semifinals game. TSU's last victory over EIU was a 67-62 victory in the Gentry Center on Dec.9, 2006.
Eastern Illinois (3-3) has three players averaging double-digits in scoring led by Ta'Kenya Nixon (12.2). Maggie Kloak (11.7) and Dominique Sims (11.2) also lead the Panthers in scoring. As a team, EIU is shooting .460 from the field, including 344 from three-point range. The Panthers average 75.3 points and 36.3 rebounds a game. EIU has wins against Northern Colorado, IPFW and Brescia.
TSU vs. EIU tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
