Nashville --- The Tennessee State University women's basketball team will travel to Chicago, Ill. to participate in the Maggie Dixon Classic hosted by DePaul University, Nov.20-21.
The Lady Tigers (0-1) opened the season with a 63-74 loss at Jackson State this past Saturday. Senior Oby Okafor led TSU with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting while LaDona Pierce added 10 points and five assists. As a team, Tennessee State went 25-of-58 from the field (43.1%) and knocked down 5-of-16 three pointers (31.3 %).
The Lady Tigers will match up with the Toreros of San Diego on Friday before facing either Cornell or host DePaul on Saturday.
San Diego (1-0) won its season opener, 88-69, over UC San Diego and will face San Diego State tonight. In the win over UC San Diego, the Toreros had four players score in double-figures led by Emily Hatch's 20 points. Hatch was a perfect 9-for-9 from the field, including 2-for-2 from three point range. As a team, the Toreros shot 30-for-53 (56.6%) from the field.
Cornell (1-1) dropped its season opener, 74-69, to Duquesne before picking up an 81-54 win over Ithaca. Virginia McMunigal averaged 13.0 points and 4.5 rebounds over both games. Lauren Benson averaged 11 while Clare Fitzpatrick tallied 10 over both contests.
Tournament host DePaul (2-0) has yet to be defeated this season. The Blue Demons have wins over Central Michigan and North Dakota State. Currently DePaul has four players averaging double figures in scoring led by Deirdre Naughton's 19.5 ppg. Jennifer Juergens averages 14.5 a game while Sam Quigley registers 12.5 points per contest. Keisha Hampton rounds out the double-digit scores for DePaul with 12.0 ppg.
This weekend will mark the first meeting between Tennessee State and all three of the competing teams.
Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. on Friday at McGrath Arena while the Lady Tigers will either play at 5:30 or 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
