Nashville --- The Tennessee State University women's basketball team will hit the road for OVC action at Eastern Kentucky on Saturday and Morehead State on Monday.
The Lady Tigers (4-7, 1-1 OVC) are coming off of a 74-66 home win over Belmont on Wednesday. Three players scored in double-figures led by Oby Okafor's 21. Nikki Rumph and Avery Jones each tallied 12 points while Jasmine Smith pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. TSU shot season-bests from the field and from the free-throw line.
With the win, Tennessee State snapped a three-game losing skid and beat Belmont for the first time since 2001.
As a team, Tennessee State is shooting 35.4 percent from the field while averaging 60.2 points a game. TSU is shooting 55.4 percent from the free-throw line and 26.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Lady Tigers average 40.8 rebounds and 19.6 turnovers per contest. Okafor is the only player averaging double -digits, with 13.6 points a game.
Eastern Kentucky (5-6) is 2-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2005-06 season. In their last game, the Lady Colonels gave up a 12-point second half lead and lost at home to Central Arkansas. EKU has lost two straight and is led in scoring & rebounding by freshmen post player Alex Jones with 11.0 ppg and 8.4 rpg.
Overall, EKU is averaging 54.1 points per game while shooting nearly 40 percent from the field. The Lady Colonels pull down 38.3 rebounds per game and average close to 25 turnovers per contest.
EKU has conference wins over Murray State and UT Martin.
Tennessee State and Eastern Kentucky will meet for the 44th time in the all-time series. EKU leads 30-13, but TSU has won four straight between the two teams. The Lady Colonels' last win against the Lady Tigers was an 80-71 win on Feb.24, 2007 in the Gentry Center.
Morehead State (9-5, 2-0 OVC) picked up conference road wins at Murray State and UT Martin earlier this season. The Eagles are led in scoring by Chynna Bozeman (19.0 ppg) and Tiffany Hamilton (11.5 ppg). Ashar Harris pulls down a league leading 10.5 rebounds per contest.
The OVC Preseason favorites lead the league in scoring defense, holding their opponents to 60.0 points a game. The Eagles average 65.2 points a game while shooting 36.4 percent from the field, including a league-best 34.2 percent from beyond the arc.
MSU leads the OVC in assists (13.7) and only commits 16.1 turnovers a game.
Tennessee State and Morehead will meet for the 43rd time with the Eagles holding a 26-16 lead. Last season, the two teams split the series with each squad winning on its home court.
