Nashville --- The Tennessee State University women's basketball team will close out 2009 with a home contest against cross town rival Belmont on Wednesday, Dec.30 in the Gentry Center at 7 p.m.
The Lady Tigers (3-7) are looking to snap a three game losing skid when they face the visiting Bruins (6-3).
TSU is coming off of a, 84-47, loss to SEC member Vanderbilt. Oby Okafor, the only player to score in double-digits, recorded her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 boards in the contest.
Okafor is TSU's leading scorer and rebounder with 12.9 ppg and 6.3 rpg. Jasmine Smith is the team's second leading scorer (8.4 ppg) and rebounder (6.2 rpg).
As a team, Tennessee State is only averaging 58.8 points a game while shooting 34.4 percent from the field. The Lady Tigers have continued to struggle from beyond the arc (25.6 percent) and from the charity stripe (53.6 percent).
Belmont (6-3) is most recently coming off of a 72-69 loss to OVC opponent Tennessee Tech. Bruins have three players averaging double-digits in scoring led by Amber Rockwell (14.4). Haley Nelson turns in 13.4 per night while Kristin Bunch adds 10.0 ppg.
Overall, BU is averaging 67.9 points per game while shooting 37.1 percent from the field. The Bruins are shooting .305 from three-point range and .711 from the line.
Tennessee State and Belmont will meet for the 28th time with the Bruins holding a 20-7 series lead. TSU's last win against BU came on Feb.20, 2001, with a 98-78 victory. Last season, the Bruins picked up a 78-72 overtime win over the Lady Tigers in the Curb Event Center.
Game time is slated for 7 p.m. in the Gentry Center on Wednesday, Dec. 30.
