Saturday, November 29, 2008

Nashville --- The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team dropped a 63-55 decision to cross-town Lipscomb University on Saturday night in Allen Arena.

It was a slow offensive start for both teams. With the game tied 5-5, TSU (2-4) suffered through a three-minute scoring drought that saw Lipscomb (2-4) capture a 9-5 lead.

TSU answered back with 11 unanswered points to claim a 16-9 lead at the 10:32 mark behind buckets from Kendra Appling, Nikki Rumph and Tiffany Jackson.

Meredith Stafford nailed a three-pointer with 4:32 left in the half to open the Lady Tiger lead to 27-16 before the Lady Bisons used a 7-2 run to close the gap to 29-23 at the halftime break.

Lipscomb carried the momentum into the second half and the deficit down to three (33-30) before the first media timeout. Although slight, TSU maintained the lead until a three-pointer by Jenna Bartsokas put Lipscomb on top 42-41 at the 9:24 mark.

The Lady Bisons stretched the lead to 54-45 at the 4:58 mark following back-to-back 3-point buckets from Jilian Partin. Tennessee State fell behind by 57-47 and was not able to overcome the deficit as Lipscomb sank six free-throws down the stretch to seal the 63-55 win.

Tiffany Jackson scored 16 second half points and finished the game with 25 to lead TSU while Kendra Appling added 15.

The Lady Tigers shot 32.8 percent from the field and 26.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Tennessee State will next face Eastern Illinois in the first OVC action of the season on Thursday, Dec.4. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. at Lantz Arena.
