Lady Tigers Hold Off Lady Govs for 74-72 Win

Clarksville, Tenn.--- Despite a late rally from Austin Peay, Tennessee State held on to defeat the Lady Govs 74-72 Saturday evening in the Dunn Center.

 

Austin Peay (5-16, 2-10 OVC) out-rebounded Tennessee State (10-12, 7-6 OVC) 43-29.  But the Lady Tigers forced the Lady Govs into 26 turnovers.

 

Tennessee State led 7-2 at the 15:47 mark of the first half but Austin Peay scored six unanswered points to grab and 8-7 lead with 13:55 on the clock. Both teams then traded buckets until a three-pointer by Kendra Appling sparked a 15-5 run that gave TSU a 30-20 advantage. APSU, however, outscored TSU 9-2 to close out the half, cutting the Lady Tiger lead down to three (32-29).

 

Austin Peay scored the first seven points of the second half to go ahead 36-32 but TSU posted the next four points to even the score 36-36.  The game was played very close until the Lady Tigers managed to create a little distance at the 8:48 mark (57-47). Two more made buckets stretched the TSU lead to 61-47.

 

TSU had an 11-point lead (68-57) with 1:13 left in the game but Austin Peay would not go away. The Lady Govs outscored the Lady Tigers 15-6 to cut the deficit to two points (72-74). With two seconds left on the clock Austin Peay had the ball but was not able to get a shot off.

 

Four Lady Tigers posted double-figures for Tennessee State led by Kendra Appling (22). Oby Okafor (18), Tiffany Jackson (16) and Charisse Hicks (10) also scored in double-digits.

 

Janay Armstrong led Austin Peay with 26 points in addition to 11 rebounds. April Thomas also recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 boards.

 

The Lady Tigers return to action on Thursday, Jan. 7 at UT-Martin. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Skyhawk Arena.
