Lady Tiger Comeback Falls Short Against Northwestern

Memphis, Tenn. --- Despite a late second half comeback, Tennessee State fell to Northwestern State 57-68 Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Lady Tiger Thanksgiving Classic.


Tennessee State falls to 1-4 while Northwestern State improves to 3-3 on the season.


It was a slow start for both teams as neither team posted more than eight points in the opening nine minutes of play. Trailing 8-9, Northwestern State went on a 7-0 run to capture a 15-9 lead at the 9:53 mark. Over the next seven minutes NSU continued to build on its lead and led by 15 (30-15) with 2:04 left to play in the half.


The Lady Tigers used their defensive pressure to force turnovers and cut the deficit down to eight before Lindzee Greene hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Northwestern an eleven point lead (33-22) going into halftime.


Northwestern increased its advantage to 43-27 at the 15:43 mark of the second half. TSU fell behind by as many as 22 points before the Lady Tigers used a 17-5 run to cut the Lady Demon’s lead down to 10 late in the game (65-55).

Despite Tennessee State’s effort, Northwestern held on to win 68-57.


Kendra Appling, named to the Lady Tiger Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament Team, led TSU in scoring for the third straight game with 22 points. Oby Okafor added 11 while Jheri Booker pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.


The Lady Tigers return to Nashville to host North Carolina Central on Thursday, Nov. 29. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
