Birmingham, Ala.--- Samford shot over fifty percent from beyond the arc and posted 52 second half points as the Bulldogs captured a 77-57 win over Tennessee State Thursday night in the Pete Hanna Center.
Tennessee State falls to 6-7 (4-2 OVC) while Samford improves to 11-5 (4-2 OVC).
Samford jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first half and stretched its advantage up to 11-4 at the 11:45 mark. TSU scored the next four points of the game to cut the deficit to three (11-8) but SU knocked down a 3-pointer to re-up the lead to 14-8 (7:55). The Lady Tigers turned up the defensive pressure and forced Samford into three consecutive turnovers that sparked a 6-0 run to even the game 14-14. With three minutes left in the half and the score tied 19-19, Samford outscored Tennessee State 6-2 to go into the halftime break with a 25-21 lead.
Samford outscored Tennessee State 12-3 in the first four minutes of the second half to jump ahead 37-24. Samford maintained a double-digit lead until TSU cut the deficit down to nine points at the 7:31 and 7:04 mark. Samford, however, would open up the game by outscoring TSU 20-9 in the final six minutes of the game to claim the 77-57 win.
Nikki Rumph led TSU with a season-high 20 points off the bench while Kendra Appling added 17. Oby Okafor tallied 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Lady Tigers next travel to Jacksonville State to face the Gamecocks. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Pete Matthews Coliseum.
