Lady Tigers Clinch Fifth Place with Win at Eastern Kentucky

Richmond, Ky.--- Tiffany Jackson scored Tennessee State’s last eight points and hit a shot with four seconds left on the clock to push TSU to a 68-66 victory over Eastern Kentucky Saturday evening at McBrayer Arena.


With the win the Lady Tigers secure a fifth place seed in the OVC tournament and move to 13-16 (10-10 OVC) on the season. Eastern Kentucky falls to 14-13 (9-11 OVC).


Oby Okafor picked up a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Tiffany Jackson tallied 18 points and seven boards. Kendra Appling added 16 points and four steals for TSU.


LaTanya Stokes led Eastern Kentucky with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Ashley Cazee (13) and Crystal Jones (11) also posted double-figures.


After a back and forth first half, TSU grabbed a nine point lead (41-32) on a lay-up by Kendra Appling to open the second half. With 18:21 on the clock EKU used an 11-1 run to go up 48-47. The game stayed close for the rest of the game.


With four seconds left on the clock and the game tied 66-66, Tiffany Jackson got an offensive rebound and a bucket to put TSU ahead 68-66. Ashley Cazee shot a lay-up with two seconds left on the clock but it rolled off the rim as TSU escaped with the win.


This win marks only the second time that TSU has defeated EKU in McBrayer Arena. The first win came in 1990.    


Tennessee State will play in the first round of the OVC tournament on Tuesday, March 4. The brackets will be released later this evening.
