Lady Tigers Beat Austin Peay in Thriller

Nashville, Tenn.--- Kendra Appling hit a shot with four seconds left on the clock to push TSU to a 70-69 win over Austin Peay Monday night in the Gentry Center.

 

With the win TSU moves 11-14, 8-8 OVC while Austin Peay falls to 5-19, 2-13 OVC.

 

Two minutes into the game, TSU grabbed a 5-4 lead on a three pointer by Kendra Appling and led for the next fifteen minutes. With the score tied 29-29, Austin Peay outscored Tennessee State 5-3 in the final two minutes of the half to claim a slight 34-32 lead at the break. 

 

Peay opened up the second half with a 6-1 run that pushed its lead to 40-33. TSU, however, responded with seven unanswered points to even the game at 40. The score went back and forth until APSU went ahead 50-43. Another TSU run would put the Lady Tigers on top 51-50 with 10:35 left to play. Both teams then battled for the rest of the half.

 

Trailing 68-69, Kendra Appling knocked down a jumper in the paint to give TSU a 70-69 advantage. A shot by Ashley McGee would fall just short as TSU held on for the win.

 

Oby Okafor paced four Lady Tiger scorers with a game-high 22 points in addition to 13 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Kendra Appling tallied her first career double-double with 12 rebounds and 10 points. Charisse Hicks had 14 points for TSU while Tiffany Jackson added 11.

 

Ashley Herring led the Lady Govs with 17 points while April Thomas (15), and Alex Bivens (14) also scored in double figures for Austin Peay.

 

The Lady Tigers return to action on Thursday when they host Murray State. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
