Thursday, January 3, 2008

Nashville, Tenn.--- Tennessee State shot better than 50 percent from the field Thursday night to help capture a 74-62 win over Morehead State in the Gentry Center.

With the win the Lady Tigers move to 5-7 (2-1 OVC) while the Eagles drop to 3-10 (1-4 OVC).

Despite continued struggles from the free-throw line, TSU shot 50.9% from the field and out rebounded MSU 48 to 35.

Oby Okafor picked up her fifth double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Kendra Appling also posted 20 points and just missed her first career double-double with nine boards. Tiffany Jackson nearly recorded a double-double as well with 18 points and nine rebounds.

Chynna Bozeman led Morehead with 22 points while Afton Perry and Brittany Pittman chipped in 11 and 10, respectively.

Morehead led 8-4 at the first media timeout but Tennessee State scored five straight points to go up 9-8 at the 13:51 mark. The lead, however, was short lived as MSU used five unanswered points to reclaim the advantage. The Eagles held on to the lead until to back to back buckets from Oby Okafor and a break-away lay-up for Tiffany Jackson once again put the Lady Tigers on top.

The score remained close and TSU went into the halftime break with a slight 29-28 lead.

TSU scored the first four points of the second half to go ahead 33-28 but MSU would not go away. Morehead outscored Tennessee State 9-4 to tie the game 37-37 with 15:21 left to play.  Both teams battled back and forth over the next four minutes as the lead changed over seven times. Trailing 45-47, Tennessee State captured the lead for good on a three point bucket by Tequila Martin with 10:58 left on the clock.

Morehead brought the game to within one point at the 7:41 mark and the 7:05 mark but Tennessee never relinquished the lead.

The Lady Tigers return to action this Saturday when they travel to Murray State. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Regional Special Events Center.
