Lady Tigers Start Slow, Drop 73-57 Decision to Skyhawks

Martin, Tenn.--- Tennessee State outscored UT-Martin in the second half but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Tigers fell to the Skyhawks 57-73 Thursday night in Elam Center.


With the loss TSU falls to 10-13, 7-7 OVC while UTM moves to 5-19, 2-12 OVC.


TSU grabbed an early 4-1 lead but it was Tennessee-Martin that would assume control. With the game tied 7-7, The Skyhawks used a 20-4  run to capture a 27-11 lead and force a TSU timeout. Following the timeout, TSU’s offensive struggles continued as UTM built on its advantage. UT-Martin took a 36-19 lead into halftime.


Tennessee State shot 26.7 percent (8-of-30) from the field in the first half and 20 percent (2-of-10) from beyond the arc. Crystal Fuller had 15 first half points for the Skyhawks.


Three back to back three pointers from Victoria Carlile in the opening moments of the second half swelled the Skyhawk lead to 45-21. UT-Martin maintained a comfortable double-digit advantage throughout the half until a three-point play by Oby Okafor brought the Lady Tigers to within nine (59-50) at the 5:20 mark. Two made free-throws by UTM on the ensuing possession, however, would re-up the Skyhawk lead to 61-50. Martin would hold on to a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.   


Oby Okafor was the only Lady Tiger that managed to score in double-figures with 19 points in addition to nine rebounds. Four Skyhawks posted double-digits led by Crystal Fuller’s 24. Phyllisha Mitchell recorded a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds while Victoria Carlile and Marie Goyette each added 11.


The Lady Tigers return to action on Saturday when they host Tennessee Tech in the Gentry Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
