Turnovers Hurt TSU in Loss to Samford

Nashville, Tenn.--- Tennessee State outscored Samford in the second half but turned the ball over 28 times in route to a 59-67 loss in the Gentry Center on Thursday night.


Tennessee State falls to 9-12 (6-6 OVC) while Samford improves to 16-6 (9-3 OVC).

Samford scored 32 points off  TSU turnovers.


The game got off to a relatively slow start as the score was only 6-5 at the first media timeout. With the game tied 15-15 Samford outscored Tennessee State 9-4 to go up 24-19 at the 4:05 mark. Two more made buckets would stretch the Samford lead to 28-19, forcing a TSU timeout. A made bucket by Kendra Appling out of the timeout would bring the Lady Tigers to within seven but the Bulldogs scored the final four points of the half to go into the break with a 31-21 lead.


TSU cut the deficit down to six (32-26) early in the second half but SU re-upped its lead to double-digits on a three-pointer by Chika Okoli. The Lady Tigers moved to within single-digits once again at the 14:27 mark but another 3-point bucket by Okoli would put the Bulldogs back on top by 11 (40-29).


Samford maintained a double-digit lead over the next 14 minutes and led by as many as 18 points. Tennessee State outscored Samford 14-5 in the final two minutes of the game but it wasn’t enough as the Bulldogs held on to win 67-59.


Tiffany Jackson led TSU with 21 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Oby Okafor tallied 18 points while Kendra Appling added 12. Chika Okoli (17), Savannah Hill (15) and Monica Maxwell all scored in double figures for Samford.


Tennessee State will next travel Austin Peay this Saturday for the first meeting of the season with the Lady Govs.
