Women?s Basketball Drops Road Contest to Butler

Indianapolis, Indiana--- Tennessee State University shot 50 percent from the field but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Tigers fell to Butler 62-72 in non-conference action Sunday afternoon in Hinkle Field House.

 

With the loss, the Lady Tigers fall to 3-7 while Butler improves to 8-1 on the season.

 

With the score tied 4-4, Butler rallied off seven unanswered points to go ahead 11-4 at the 15:51 mark of the first half. A three-point bucket from Charisse Hicks would bring the Lady Tigers to within one (22-23) with 7:05 left in the half but the Bulldogs responded with an 8-0 run that re-upped the lead to 31-22. With the Lady Tigers trailing 30-37 and with 1.6 seconds left in the half, Kendra Appling knocked down a 3-point shot from beyond half court to bring the game to 33-37 going into the break.

 

Butler outscored TSU 18-9 to open up the second half and captured a 55-42 lead at the 12:05 mark.  The Lady Tigers cut the deficit down to single digits on a number of occasions but the Bulldogs would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game.

 

Tennessee State committed 27 turnovers while Butler only coughed up the ball 13 times, with just three in the second half.

 

Oby Okafor led four double-digit scorers for TSU with 18 points and eight rebounds. Kendra Appling (15), Tiffany Jackson (13), and Charisse Hicks (11) also posted double figures for the Lady Tigers. LaDona Pierce handed out nine assists.

 

Lade Akande paced Butler with a game-high 23 points while Susan Lester recorded a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds.

 

The Lady Tigers return to Nashville to host Lipscomb University on Thursday, Dec. 20. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
