NASHVILLE---Five Lady Tigers scored in double figures as the Tennessee State University women's basketball team rolled past the Bulldogs of Fisk University 79-21 Monday night in the Gentry Center. In doing so, the Lady Tigers end a seven game losing streak and improve to 4-12 overall. Oby Okafor paced the Lady Tigers with a game-high 17 points while Kendra Appling, Tiffany Jackson and Taviunna Mayberry each chipped in 12. Jheri Booker tallied 11 points and Meesha Jackson pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Fisk scored the first points of the game on a lay-up by Patrice Smoot but TSU would quickly capture the lead behind five straight points from the Lady Tigers (4-2). With 15:57 on the clock a jumper by Tia Williams cut the Lady Tiger lead down to three (7-4). TSU would re-up the lead to seven at the 14:19 mark before Stephanie Lewis cut the Fisk deficit down to five points once again (11-6). That, however, would be the last time that the Bulldogs would score in the first half as TSU rattled off 34 unanswered points to go into the intermission with a 45-6 lead. The second half was more of the same as the Lady Tigers continued to build on the lead. Tennessee State out-scored Fisk 34-15 in the second half in route to the 79-21 victory. Tennessee State shot a season-high 61.4 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Bulldogs 54-25. The Lady Tigers will travel to Southeast Missouri on Thursday (Jan. 18) before traveling to Eastern Illinois to face the Panthers on Saturday (Jan.20).
