LADY TIGERS COME UP SHORT AGAINST ALCORN STATE
ATLANTA, Georgia---The Tennessee State University women's basketball team dropped the consolation game 58-48 to Alcorn State Saturday afternoon at the Atlanta Marriott Holiday Invitational. With the loss the Lady Tigers fall to 3-7 overall while Alcorn State improves to 4-6. The score stayed close from the tip with three ties and four lead changes in the opening four minutes of play. After about a four minute scoring drought by both teams, Rassan Powell scored to put the Lady Braves on top 9-8 at the 12:37 mark. The score went back and forth until two steals and two buckets by Nikki Rumph would give TSU the 19-16 lead with 8:19 on the clock. However, the lead would be short lived as Rasaan Powell scored five straight points to reclaim Alcorn State's lead (21-19). The final minutes of the first half saw Alcorn State out-score Tennessee State 11- 7 to take a 32-26 lead into intermission. After one half of play, Jheri Booker led Tennessee State with six points. The Lady Tigers only connected on 1-of-7 from the free-throw line (14.3 %) and committed 10 turnovers. Alcorn State opened the second half on a 10-0 run to extend its lead to sixteen points (42-26). TSU didn't score until the 13:31 mark on a lay-up by Tiffany Jackson. Determined and down by fifteen points with 11:10 left to go in the game, Tennessee State went on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit down to five (45-40) at the 7:21 mark. A jumper by Rasaan Powell would end the TSU run but seven unanswered points by the Lady Tigers capped by a Jamika Banks jumper would knot the game at 47-47 with just under five minutes left to play. Tennessee State struggled to score down the stretch as the Lady Tigers only scored one point in the last five minutes of the game. Oby Okafor was the only Tennessee State player that scored in double-figures. She posted 13 points and recorded her third double-double of the season with 11 rebounds. Okafor was also named to the All-Tournament Team. Tennessee State out-rebounded Alcorn State but continued its struggles from the free-throw line, only shooting 30 percent for the game. Rasaan Powell paced Alcorn State with a game-high 17 points in addition to 11 rebounds. The Lady Tigers next travel to Morehead State for Ohio Valley Conference action on Monday January 2. Game time is set for 4:15 p.m. central.
