NASHVILLE---Four Lady Tigers scored in double figures as Tennessee State defeated Lipscomb 64-52 Monday night in Allen Arena. In doing so, the Lady Tigers claim their first win of the season and break a 30 game losing streak. Sophomore Kendra Appling led all scores with 17 points and six steals for TSU. Freshman Jheri Booker just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine boards. Sophomore Oby Okafor chipped in 11 points while Junior Meesha Jackson produced a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Both teams got off to a slow start as neither team posted more than two points in the opening four minutes of play. Lipscomb managed to get its offense going with a 4-1 run to jump ahead 6-3. The Lady Tigers started clicking offensively and put together a 12-2 run of their own to grab a 15-8 lead. The Lady Bisons would battle back to knot the game at 15 with 8:39 on the clock. There would be ties of 17 and 19 before Lipscomb re-claimed the lead (23-20) with 3:55 left on the clock. TSU, however, would go on a 9-0 run to finish the half and capture a 29-23 lead going into the break. Lipscomb opened the second half with a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to one (33-32). A jumper by Kendra Appling would stop the bleeding and give TSU a slight three point advantage (37-34) at the 14:01 mark. TSU would maintain leads of three and five over the next five minutes. TSU stretched its lead to 11 with 7:24 left on a three pointer by Kendra Appling. A three pointer by Lipscomb's Julie Martin would put the Lady Bisons within seven but that would be as close as they would get. Tennessee State out-rebounded Lipscomb 48-30 and forced the Lady Bisons to 30 turnovers. The Lady Bisons were led in scoring by Penny Jones with 16. The Lady Tigers will play on their home court for the first time this season when they host Southeast Missouri in OVC action December 7. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
