NASHVILLE---The Tennessee State University women's basketball team recorded a season-high 21 steals and forced UT-Martin to 37 turnovers as the Lady Tigers downed the Skyhawks 61-35 Thursday night in the Gentry Center. The Lady Tigers extend their home winning streak to four games and move to 7-17 overall (4-11 OVC). UT-Martin falls to 8-15 and 7-7 in the league. UT-Martin's 35 points marks the lowest point total by a Division-I opponent in the history of the TSU women's basketball program. Oby Okafor continued her offensive leadership as she led TSU with 22 points. Kendra Appling added 13 points and four steals while Jheri Booker chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. LaDona Pierce also collected four steals. Jennifer Angler had a team-high nine points for the Skyhawks. The Lady Tigers pounced on the Skyhawks in the opening moments of the game grabbing a quick 8-0 lead. A lay-up by Alishia Glover brought the Skyhawks to within five (10-5) at the 15:18 mark but TSU responded with a 22-1 run to capture a commanding 32-6 lead with 5:20 to play in the half. Tennessee State entered the intermission with a 34-14 advantage over the Skyhawks. TSU opened the second half with a lay-up from Oby Okafor and 12 unanswered points to go ahead 46-14. UT-Martin did not score in the second half until a made free-throw by Deina Willingham at the 14:17 mark. Tennessee State maintained a comfortable lead throughout the remainder of the game in route to the 61-35 victory. The Lady Tigers next travel to Cookeville, TN to face the Golden Eagles of Tennessee-Tech in a rematch of last month's meeting in which Lady Tigers defeated Tech 57-50. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
