LADY TIGERS CLINCH FIFTH SEED WITH SEASON-ENDING VICTORY
NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee State women's basketball team clinched the fifth seed in the upcoming Ohio Valley Conference Tournament with a 54-50 victory over Jacksonville State, the team the Lady Tigers will play in the opening round. TSU finished the season with an 8-8 OVC record and is the conference's most improved team after going winless within the league last season. The Lady Tigers will travel to play the fourth-seed JSU team Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Lady Tigers built as much as a 13-point lead in the second half before JSU rallied to tie the game at 48-48 with 1:51 remaining in the game. Kendra Bailey's layup with 1:21 left in the game gave TSU the lead for good. TSU made just 2-6 free throws the rest of the way but got a layup from Latoya Clay with 36 seconds left and held JSU to a lone field goal in the final minute of play. LaToya Clay equaled a season-high with 16 points. Quanecia Fletcher added 11 points and anchored the Lady Tiger defense with eight steals. Leslie Dean added 10 points and LaKisha Clay handed out six assists. TSU had 23 of its 43 rebounds on the offensive end. The Lady Tigers had 20 more attempts from the field than JSU. TSU was 21-69 for 30 percent while JSU was 20-49 for 41 percent. JSU was led by Rebecca Haynes with 13 points. The Gamecocks Shanika Freeman posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
